Newton was highly sought after until the end of his life. His photos for various fashion magazines were some of the first to overtly present female nudity in a triumphant and empowering manner. Interested in photography from the age of 12 when he purchased his first camera, he worked for the German photographer Elsie Neuländer Simon from 1936. In 1948, Newton married actress June Brunell, a fellow photographer who later would photograph Newton and work with him on his books. She refused to pose for a photograph without a smile to avoid the risk of looking disagreeable. His photo Le Smoking, came be iconic and perhaps his most well known image. He was held at the Tatura internment camp in north-eastern Victoria until 1942, before enlisting in the Australian army as a truck driver.

Helmut Newton was a German high-fashion photographer. After his release, he served in the Australian army for five years, enabling him to become an Australian citizen. Each went on to independent careers. It could therefore be read as a critique of fashion magazines that turn the women into passive commodities just like the clothes they are wearing. Helmut had wanted to photograph Margaret Thatcher for a number of years. Among other honors, Newton received the German Kodak Award for Photographic Books, a Life Legend Award from Life magazine, and an award from the American Institute for Graphic Arts for his photographs.

This portrait, which is part of the collection at the National Portrait Gallery in London, is one which Margaret Thatcher is said to have told Newton she hated. Plaque of his birthhouse in , Berlin.
